Abstract

Introduction: Escherichia coli is the  predominant organism in urinary tract infections. It produces various virulence factors and shows multiple antibiotic resistance. The present study aimed at the detection of antibiotic resistance among the urinary E.coli isolates and the production of ESBL(extended spectrum beta lactamase) and ability of biofilm formation among them Materials and Methods:100 E.coli isolates were subjected to detection of antibiotic resistance by Kirby bauers disk diffusion method. Detection of extended spectrum beta lactamase production is done in accordance with CLSI guidelines. The biofilm production among the isolates were done by tube method and microtitre plate method

Results: Out of 100 E.coli isolates 83 (83%) were ESBL positive by screening method..Among 83 isolates 80 were ESBL positive by confirmatory method. Out of 100 isolates 63(63%) were biofilm producers by tube method and 79(79%) were biofilm producers by microtiterplate method.

Conclusion: As the pathogen are showing increasing resistance pattern Strict antibiotic policy should be followed to prevent increasing resistance among the E.coli isolates.
