Abstract

Introduction - Deaths due to cancer have been estinated to reach an approximate of 12 million by the year 2030. Upper gastrointestinal malignancy which is inclusive of carcinomas of esophagus and stomach, is one of the 8 leading causes of cancer worldwide. These malignancies are more often associated with late presentation of symptoms leading to delayed diagnosis and therefore a poor outcome.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify the burden of upper GI malignancies in central India and compare the findings with the data available in Indian and Western literature.

Methodology: This is a retrospective study carried out using the information from 63 patients between the years 2017-2019  at  a rural hospital with tertiary care facilities, located in Central India.

Discussion: Through our study we have discovered that upper GI malignancies have a predilection for males with a maximum number of cases occurring in the age group between 60-69 years. We have also found that among the cases studied, lower 1/3 of esophagus was the most common site of occurrence of oesophageal cancer.

Conclusion: Through this study, we aim to gain a greater insight into the burden of this disease and come up with effectual methods for early diagnosis and treatment.
